Digital Découpage Embossing (myGraphico recipe challenge!)

Posted on 00:30 by Unknown
The problem with digital images is that you can't get
any pattern or texture with them, right?
Nuh Uh
, my friends! ;-D

This furry little Squirrel buddy is as digital as they get, but
he's all texturized & patterned too! :o)
(he's embossed on some decoupaged book paper):

...He's from myGrafico and is part of a digital kit called
Autumn Elements Stamps (by dilek design studio)...

...he lives on the cutest corner-bracket branch....

...and his new home is on this mini corkboard:

(yup, i know, i'm a nut!)

2...achieving digital découpage embossing
3...making a really speedy mini corkboard
4...cheap tricks: DIY fancy post it notes

-1-

the myGraphico Challenge Blog
has all kinds of gorgeous work by their talented design team

this project was for their
Recipe Challenge #16:
1 digi + 2 patterned papers + and 3 embellishments

I've never done a recipe challenge before (I live under a rock sometimes), so I hope it wasn't cheating to use the cork sheeting...(apparently, I also turn into Dr. Seuss sometimes, ynuk ynuk)

1 digi:
The sweet squirrel on a branch (part of a digital kit from myGrafico called Autumn Elements Stamps and created by dilek design studio.)

2 patterned papers:
makingmemories 12x12 Toil Mocha Paperie (Item# 31001)
& a vintage book page (or text pattern paper.)

3 embellishments:
Googlie eye, Button push pin, Stitching.

-2-

...achieve digital découpage embossing

  • Vintage book paper
  • Mod Podge & a brush (the rougher the bristles, the more texture you get)
  • embossing powder & heat gun

Step 1} Stick a vintage book page to a standard sheet of cardstock. Let it dry well. Flatten under books if needed.

(I used lots of mod podge especially between the page & the cardstock to be sure there was no bubbles or areas without Mod Podge.)

Please note (!): Other glues might work as well-as long as they dry hard enough to not mess up the printer (no guarantees there, of course.) I use a very affordable Canon Pixma all in one printer ($50.00) so that I don't have to worry about it. :o)

1) You could do this on any patterned paper of course. You could also experiment with the medium (using gesso, acrylic paint, gel mediums, digital grounds, matte medium...)

2) Change up the application method: sponge or make swirled brush strokes.

3) You can even stamp in the wet Mod Podge (or other medium) to get even more texture, but please be sure to clean your stamp as soon as possible.

Step 2} Print & emboss the digital image from Autumn Elements & cut it out.

Step 3} Colour the image with Copic markers. The brushed mod podge gives nifty texture, especially if you remove some colour with a colourless blender or a lighter copic. Copic maker colouring may be sticky before the Copic marker cures. The water-proofing of the Mod Podge gives a nice sheen to the Copics.

Step 4} Adhere a googlie eye onto Mr. Squirrel

-3-

...make a speedy mini corkboard

  • patterned paper
  • acrylic paint
  • pieces cut from a roll of cork
  • piece of artist mat board
  • exacto blade, ruler, & scissors
  • Nestabilities Label die & Cuttlebug
  • Paper piercer, needle, & thread
  • Tombow Monomulti
  • Copy paper

Step 2}
Cut the pieces for the corkboard (all the same size):
  • 2/3 pieces of cork (a roll from the hardware store for 7 bucks)
  • a piece of artist mat board
  • a piece of patterned paper (die cut with a Nestabilities label shape.)

Step 3} Paint the patterned paper frame with acrylic paint (tones down the contrast & adds snifty texture)

Step 4}
(Optional to make stitching easier): Make the frame sturdy by adhering it to a second frame (made of cardstock.)

The easiest way I've found to line the two frames up perfectly is:

A) Plan ahead & adhere the patterned paper to cardstock first & cut it at the same time (no duh, hey?)
or B) if you're nutty like me & add everything as an afterthought:
  • Cut them separately.
  • Line the frame parts up when you stick them together.
  • Trim the excess crooked cardstock using the painted frame as a guide.

Step 5} Pierce & stitch the frame with embroidery thread.

Step 6} Layer the cork pieces onto the mat board, adhering them to each other.

Step 7} Apply adhesive to the back of the frame.

Step 8} Stick the frame onto the cork sheet layers.

Step 9}
Apply adhesive to the back of the Squirrel & leafy bits & adhere it to the corkboard & patterned paper frame:

-4-

Make your own mini post it notes by cutting copy
paper layers with a small Nestabilites label die:

You could also make sticky-back notes: For a temporary adhesive, I've found Dotto works really well, or you could use a thin layer of Tombow Monomulti (dry it first & it becomes a temporary adhesive.) I apply a little adhesive just at the top of the back.

and there you have it:

a place to store some nuts oops, store some notes! ;o)

Happy Fall!

{Jena Witch} Over the Moon box (an LPS peek)

Posted on 08:15 by Unknown
Thank You again so much for understanding again when I have to pull a disappearing act. As though you really had a choice, right? ;-) Sorry, I wish it wasn't necessary to miss days & You know me, I feel ultra guilty and broken-record-y. I would much rather hang with You all, but life--and Monsieur Migraine (aka the-evil-head-torturer) is still getting in the way daily, dang it all!

Anywho, without further ado, meet {Jena Witch}!
the newest set from Little Paper Shop

She's sittin' pretty over the city. :o)

1...preview peek of the new Little Paper Shop Set {Jena Witch}
2...pictorial for how to make a moon treat box
3...the round box template

(new LPS Set {Jena Witch})

This lil' witch is flyin in on Tuesday
(her release day at LPS)

Nothing like a cute new stamp to fire up your mojo, hey? I'm so stoked about today's sneak preview {Jena Witch}. I flip for Halloween. I've dressed up as a witch a few time (and a vampire, princess Leia, an alien, a bunny wabbit, a crow... you get the idea...I lurve Halloween madly!)
Want to win her?
Simply comment on the LPS blog here!
easy or what? ;o)

...make a moon treat box

  • {Jena Witch} stamp set (Coming soon to the Little Paper Shop!)
  • Round box template (linked below)
  • Core'dinations cardstock (Roy G Biv Super Assortments-2 yellows)
  • Sandpaper
  • Printer & text file (details below)
  • Strong adhesive (I used Scor-tape & Tombow)
  • Scissors & paper cutter
  • Scor-pal (or another scoring tool)
  • Paper piercer, black thread, & needle
  • Black ink, clear embossing powder, & heat gun
  • Prismacolour pencils, Copic markers, & Sakura Souffle pens
  • BasicGrey Ambrosia paper (6x6 pack)
  • Copic Spica (clear) & Silver Zigpainty pen

Step 1} Trace, cut, & score the round box template.

Step 2} Sand Core'dinations cardstock to distess it & remove the dust.

Step 3}
Make the ruffled edge. This is a trick I learned from the Brilliant Nathalia; her fantastic tutorial is here. These are made this way...

A) Print Halloween text onto the sanded Core'dinations cardstock
B) Let the printer ink dry for a couple seconds
C) Cut it into strips
D) Score it & fold it (I scored it every half an inch)
E) Adhere the folds to themselves--curving it to fit the circular box.

(This text is Edgar Allen Poe's The Black Cat typed in MSword in Underwood Champion a free font from dafont

Step 4}
Adhere the folded text strips around the circle & trim them (using the box circle edge as a cutting guide)

Step 5}
Pierce & stitch through the folded strips.

Step 6} Cut a city (this was cut with the Cricut Expression & the cartridge that comes with it Plantin Schoolbook) (For more details on how this city was made please see this post.)

Step 7} Stamp {Jena Witch} in Black ink & emboss her with clear embossing powder. She's coloured with a mix of Prismacolour pencils, Copic markers, & Sakura pens. I paper pieced her dress using BasicGrey Ambrosia paper.

Her fishnet stockings are my favourite part (she's sassy! heehee) A pencil crayon seemed the easiest way to get a thin, soft line on them.

Step 8} Trace & cut two semi circles to line the box with. This is more of that BasicGrey Ambrosia.

Step 9} Adhere the liner pieces inside the box. (Dear Tombow, I loves ya too much!)

Step 10} Glue the paper pieces onto {Jena Witch} & stick her to the top of the moon box.

(round box template at 80%)

For now it's just a traceable template...

I tried to make a new whole template with 2 round ends, but my technical skill is rather limited, so I couldn't get it to work & had to give up, for now. (I need tech support! LOL)

Used at this percentage, this makes a 4.5 inch diameter box.
For the original 5.5 inch box template, please see this post.

Thanks for flyin' by!

Speedy round gift bag (Challenge 2 for the Palooza!)

Posted on 08:30 by Unknown

Challenge two for the Cuttlebug Challenge Blog Birthday Palooza is to make a gift bag & card. This one uses some recycling (anybody have empty ribbon spools?) :-D It actually goes together surprisingly quickly too!

It's round. :o) Depending on the diameter of your ribbon spool
this type of round bag fits a bottle of wine perfectly:

(Woofy photo, sorry but you get the idea...You could
leave the paper full size for a taller gift bag...)

Cuttlebug Challenge Blog
Be Inspired Wednesday #48 (Gift Bag & Card)

Hope You can join us in the challenge:

(#48 Gift Bag & Card)

The Cuttlebug team has made some
amazing
things for this challenge!

-2-

...make a round gift bag
(from a cardboard ribbon spool)

  • an empty pool of ribbon
  • scissors
  • strong double-sided tape
  • Core'dinations Whitewash cardstock
  • Provocraft embossing folders (Happy Birthday & Floral Fantasy); and a Cuttlebug Machine
For supplies used to make the leaves please see this post.

Step 1) Trim the top & bottom rims off of a ribbon spool so that it is a squat cylinder.

Step 2) Trace it to cut 2 circles of cardstock to cover the hole & the writing on the ribbon spool.

:o) For a fun kids bag you could turn it into a shaker:
  • Add one circle on the bottom of the spool
  • Fill the spool (assuming it has a hole) with beans/whatever
  • Add the second paper round to seal it
  • Finish constructing the bag....

Step 3) Cut a piece of Core'dinations Whitewash cardstock (This ribbon spool is fairly large in diameter (3-1/2 inches) so it required the full length of the Core'dinations paper. I trimmed it to be 8-1/2 inches high, though, & covered the words with an extra strip of Core'dinations.

Step 4) Cover the sides of the ribbon spool in a strong double-sided tape & wrap the Core'dinations cardstock around it.

Step 5) Adhere the end of the cardstock down to finish the assembly.

Step 6)
Emboss & sand strips of Core'dinations White wash to trim the bottom & top of the bag.

Step 7) Finish embellishing:

Since this is for a stampin' party, I'm gonna fill it up with stamping treats as a gift for the Bday gal (Hey, it would fit some rolls of ribbon perfectly, LOL.)

Thanks so much for visiting!

P.S. Here's the matching invitation
(& a pictorial on how the leaves were made)
