Cheats for fabric & Leather: Black Satin Purse Box (with fringe bottom)

Posted on 17:42 by Unknown

Tryin' to whip up some ideas for Mom's day. Fabric is something I haven't worked with much, so I thought it felt kind of special. It's glued to cardstock here, which makes it easier to handle than regular old tricksy fabric.

Wish you could see this in person (my photography is always lacking.) This is my favourite fabric in the whole wide world. The little coloured buds in it glow like they're lit up from inside! I have just a little remnant of it (got it at a second hand store.) Paired with my new fave... Leather Cardstock (from Paper Temptress), it makes for a really sturdy & textural gift-y thingamabob.

...making a fabric box (with fringe bottom & beading)
...recycling for funny feet (thread spools)

  • Black Leather Cardstock (for the box)
  • Tombow Monomulti (or other glue suitable for fabric)
  • Scrap cardstock (to glue fabric to)
  • Paper piercer
  • Needle & Embroidery thread
  • Seed beads
  • Scissors (sharp) :O)
  • Empty thread spools (or other feet)
  • Crystal Lacquer (or other really strong adhesive)
  • Oh so sticky tape (or other strong double-sided tape)

...make a fabric box (with fringe bottom & beading)

Step 1) glue fabric to cardstock (I like Tombow Monomulti)

...reusing misprinted pieces of cardstock is always handy; however, in hindsight, I'd probably use the same colour as your box. I had to cover the backs of these in black cardstock (made them stronger though...):

Step 2) Trace any shape you like that fits onto a rectangular box as a template onto the back of the fabric-glued cardstock

To make this shape, I traced a plastic scraper--of all things-- got it from Victorian Epicure (company that sells spices & kitchen stuff, LOL.) I would've traced the scraper to make a template for you, but I lost it in the move. :O(

Step 3)
Cut out the front & back pieces

Step 4) Seal edges with adhesive to prevent fraying (of course, depending on your fabric, you may not need to do the fray check step)

Step 5)
Pierce & stitch edges if you like (I stitched it in turquoise & added black embroidery thread fringe). Fringe tutorial here.

Step 6) Sew on beads.

Piercing from the back first lets you see where you're adding the holes for sewing on beads. (The fabric I used hid the holes on the front...)

The handle is just made by covering a strip of cardstock using the exact same process...

...except with fabric on both sides & edged with black stitches instead of blue.

The box construction:

The box is made from that snifty Leather Cardstock from Paper Temptress. (It has the texture of leather, but a classy matte finish which makes it so stamp-able.) Luv the weight of it for boxes.

This super simple rectangular box measures:
  • 5 inches wide
  • 3 inches high
  • 2 and 1/2 inches deep
These instructions are not to scale, but hopefully they're clear enough...

Step 1) Start with a standard piece of cardstock (8 1/2 by 11)
Step 2) With the paper placed horizontally, score at 3 inches & 8 inches
Step 3)
Turn the paper, so it's vertical; score at 2 1/2 inches & 5 1/2 inches
Step 4) Cut slits (where indicated by red lines)
Step 5) Assemble with good double-sided tape

Funny Feet (thread spools)

The feet on this box raise it up to let the fringe hang down:

here's how they were made,
or rather how they were recycled... ;o)

You can see the snazzy texture of the Leather Cardstock in this photo:

These feet are just empty thread spools (black ones from those packages of dollar store thread) They're glued on with Crystal lacquer. Of course, if that's just too odd for your taste, you could use big beads or wooden feet, if you like.

Alternate way to use fabric? Instead of working directly with fabric, you could scan your favourite fabric & print it on cardstock.

To make a quicker box that's faster but still custom:
buy any box you like the looks of and attach a panel that you've made (on the lid, the sides, or the inside...) :O)

Click here for the card post
She had to have a coordinating purse... ;o)

(It's the Miss Anya set
that I got from Paper Garden Projects.
)

Thank you so much for stopping in
& see you Saturday,

Paper Temptress Texture & Winnie the Pooh

Posted on 08:14 by Unknown
ETA: Hi You wonderful People You,

Blog Break blah-blah-blah:
I'm feeling pretty sick, sinus+lung thing still, so I need to take a couple days break. No need to worry though--just need some rest with the new antibiotics (and yogurt) ;O)

If you're looking for a good probiotic yogurt. The Doctor I saw today swears by Olympia Probiotic. I compared labels with Danone (the drinks) and it has same 2 probiotic varieties as Danone and then some...mmmm good bacteria. LOL

Hope you're all enjoying a lovely spring,
:O)
Mel

Today, my blogging is over at the Paper Temptress Community.... had fun with Winnie the pooh (a colouring page; yay, they make for lots of free digital images!) ;O) There's lots of Paper Temptress texture:
  • embossed & sanded Cadillac Glossy Cardstock clouds
  • Copic coloured embossed Heavy weight Clear vellum cardstock
  • Winnie the Pooh digi printed on Canvas Silver Lustre paper (text weight)

You can check it out here, if you like:

My card is just a silly whip together (first one of those I've made. I didn't fuss as much as normal, I just decided to have fun and use a very relaxed (aka LAZY style.) hehehe

BUT...there are all kinds of unlazy and stunning creations by the PT design team there too.

Thank You so very much for taking time from your busy day!

(today the ol' blog should be called: Tempting you with Paper) ;o)

Sealing Digital Images (+ a Huge Sale at LPS!)

Posted on 09:29 by Unknown

Hi Gals n Guys,

Happy Monday! Hope you had a lovely weekend. It's been beautiful & sunny here in Vancouver. Today I'm just sharing a quick tip that I've found really handy: microglaze for sealing digital images. (I've been luvin' the growing selection of LPS digis.)

Edited to Add Please Note! This may clog marker tips. Since writing this post, I've found that embossing digital images is a much better way to keep them from smearing. I use Borden & Riley Paris Bleedproof paper for pens, an ink jet printer with clear embossing powder and a heat gun. The results are amazing. More about heat embossing digital images with an ink jet printer here.

Green:
This is an environmentally friendly way to keep them from smudging (no aerosol spray sealer) and it's brain cell friendly too (no nasty fumes.)

Effects:
It does create a waterproof quality to your image, but I've found you can still colour with water-based products quite nicely & get some neat effects by varying how thickly you apply the microglaze. It makes the printer ink darker & it really makes colours POP too. Hope it's useful to ya!

...seal digital images with no spray sealant

  • Cardstock
  • Digital Images
  • Microglaze
  • Colouring medium of your choice

Step 1) Print your digital image (or text or photo or...)

Step 2) Get some Microglaze. You can do all kinds of neat things with this stuff
  • Microglaze TV weekly stamping video with Judi
  • The info package to go with the video above
  • Uses for microglaze (from Judikins)
  • Microglaze website
  • Uses for microglaze by MaryJo (love the idea to make a metallic paste with pearlex or perfect pearls (other pigment powders should work too.)
  • Peeling paint technique (use Microglaze in place of Petroleum jelly)
  • Cindy uses it to Waterproof images

The texture of the Microglaze is paste like.

Step 3) Rub the Microglaze all over your image (and surrounding area, wherever you want to colour or add gloss.)

When your image is on an angle, you can see the subtle shine it leaves. More Microglaze less shine. Less=less shine, (no duh, huh?) LOL. ;O)

Step 4) Colour your image however you like. I tested out SU's water-based markers (her shoes) & Watercolour pencil crayons (her hair), Copic markers (her dress), Souffle pens the cupcake kite ribbons.) The water-based markers soaked right in; the copics let me move them around a lot more than without sealant. Best of all, no smudge-y!

bit more about microglaze:

Chef Ian Tea Cup card (+ embossing ribbon with no starch)

Posted on 11:20 by Unknown
Ooops, late today...was running so low on energy...
but here is something new pour vous...
&
Thank You ever so much for always being there with
such kind kind words to keep a gal's mojo a'gogo!

Oh Man oh man, this Happy Chef stamp set is worth it just for the cute accessory stuff they've cooked up in there, IMHO. This tea/coffee cup stole my heart so I had to make a card with just it (and that wee "enjoy" sentiment is so yummy too!) You'll be seeing the rest of this Greeting Farm set here soon, but if you'd like to check the whole set out right now, it's at Paper Garden Projects...

click the pic:
Adorable huh?

1...brew up wee cups of tea
2...make a double-sided tea bag tag
3...emboss ribbon (with no starch)
4...Cheap Tricks: sneaky speedy stitches
5...Tool talk: Beads & Tim Holtz Design Ruler
-1-

...brew up wee cups of tea

  • Tea/Coffee cup stamp from Happy Chef
  • Copic markers
  • Puffy velvet pen
  • Crystal Lacquer
  • Paper: Basic Grey Marrakech paper pack

Step 1)
Stamp the tea/coffee cup (I stamped it onto patterned paper from the Basic Grey Marrakech paper pack. It has a sweet little pattern on it.

Step 2) Colour it. I used... for the tea: E-44 Clay, E-49 Dark Bark, & a multiliner to shade near the cup rim. For the cup: B-00 Frost Blue & BG-15 Aqua & BG-75 Abyss Green

Step 3) Add puffy pen details on the little swoop of whip cream, dry it, & heat gun to puff (SO cool!) :O)

Step 4) Cover coffee cup with Crystal Lacquer & set aside to dry

Step 5) Cut coffee cup out ( I found there was no need to cut out the inside of the handle, but if you wanted to a hobby blade would make short work of that.) :O)

-2-

...create a double-sided tea bag tag

This is the bag of the "enjoy" tag. I always like to make things double-sided, feels like a cute sneaky secret is built into your card for someone... ;o)

  • Tea/Coffee cup & "Enjoy" sentiment stamp from Happy Chef
  • Paper: Basic Grey Marrakech paper pack, River Rock, Basic Grey Flurry
  • Watercolour pencil crayons
  • Scor-Pal
  • Oh So Sticky Tape
  • Tag punch
  • String from a real tea bag

Step 1)
Stamp "enjoy" from Happy Chef onto patterned paper [this is Basic Grey's Flurry (Dasher)]

Step 2) Punch with a tag punch to cut a tag

Step 3) Adhere the tag on an end of a piece of cardstock (River Rock)

Step 4) Score, fold & trim the tag (to create a frame the shape of the small punched tag

Step 5) Pierce a hole (at the top of the fold) for the tea bag string & stick it in there (creating a loop, if you like). Adhere it in place.

Step 6) Stick the inside of the tag together (I used Oh So Sticky Tape)

Step 7) Stamp the tea cup again (I stamped in turquoise) onto that Marrakech paper

Step 8) Colour it in (I used Watercolour pencil crayons) & punch it with tag punch

Step 9) Adhere the tea cup onto the back of the tag

...hmmm well that was a lot of steps for a simple thing (useless to the majority of you for sure, but maybe good info for a beginner, LOL)

-3-

...emboss ribbon (with no starch)

Some green crafting for your green machine (or other embossing apparatus...) I was super stoked when this happened to work, because I detest the environmental effects of aerosol cans and this requires no spray starch or time consuming brushing on of ribbon stiffener.

This is as easy as sticking adhesive on paper (cause that's all you do really...) Hope it's as fun for you as it was for me.

  • Ribbon
  • Double-sided tape
  • Cardstock
  • Cuttlebug/other machine
  • Embossing folder

Step 1) Cut strip of cardstock to measure just under the width of your ribbon (or wider if you want a cs edge to show) U can use DP & sheer ribbons too

Step 2) Trim cardstock (to the width of your card or project) & Cover the front of your cardstock with double-sided tape (If you are using patterned paper, put adhesive on patterned side so it'll show) :O)

Step 3) Adhere paper strip to ribbon (sticky side down onto back side of ribbon) & stick ends to back

Step 4) Emboss ribbon-cardstock strip with an Embossing folder

;o)
Of course, different ribbons will show the embossing to lesser or greater effect: stiffer ribbons hold embossing much more nicely. The two ribbons below are a polyester twill (TOP which was so-s0) and a taffeta ribbon (BOTTOM which was the cat's meow!):

Stiffer ribbons hold the embossing like a dream
(with the cardstock & adhesive underneath it stays put)

Below is the piece used on this card:

It's SU's Baja Breeze grosgrain ribbon with the white stitching removed. The dots were still there after a great deal of handling the piece, but not as crisp as with Taffeta.

...create sneaky speedy stitches

I'm a sneaky cheat! hehehe. This looks like a funky blanket stitch (and some of it I really did sew) but the rest of it is faux! The fine dark lines are from my beloved Copic Multiliner.

It's hard to tell that some of it is fake
(without a magnifying glass, anyway) ;o)

Another stitch trick: Colour stitches with a Copic marker to change their hue as an afterthought. The turquoise stitches on that dark Verdigris piece were the wrong shade of Turquoise. (Interested in how that dark Verdigris was made? There's a tutorial for making Faux Verdigris with mod podge, here. It's also embossed and the flattened. Squished Cuttlebugging here.)

(seed beads)

I love seed beads WAY too much. They are dirt cheap (especially if your dollar store carries them! I've noticed recently that Michael's is packaging the exact same beads in WAY smaller quantities and jacking up the price. Hissssssss!) ;o) But beads can still be found for next to nothing.

There are so many ways to use beads on cards.
You can glue, but you know I like to sew...

The beads on here are alternated in colours (black & clear with silver centers.) It'd look really nifty if you had the patience to lay out a pattern of a bunch of colours. :O)

(Tim Holtz Design Ruler)

I got mine here, at Paper Garden Projects. Tim has a fabulous demo here. (Though I must be honest that I wasn't at all happy with that piercer in the demo (sorry); the tip bent & it slid into it's casing all the time...granted I am hard on my tools...) I couldn't work without this ruler though. It's my piercing buddy, but is also great for drawing templates & for lining up pieces on cards:

Makes it so easy!

and there you have it...

...another way too long post,
but I hope it held something useful for you. :O)

Happy Happy Happy Spring!

(today the ol' blog should be called: Coffee, Tea, or Embossed Ribbon?)

P.S. how to make the texture cardstock here:
